BETTAS: AN INTRODUCTION

Betta splendens
are one of the most beautiful aquarium fish available. They are also one of the most well-known across many countries. Unfortunately these attractive fish often suffer as a result of their eyecatching looks and small size. They are often kept in unsuitable aquaria and never have the opportunity to show off their true beauty.

 Betta Splendens

At My Betta we hope to show just how much more stunning these fish can be when kept well. A very hardy fish, they do not have many or complex requirements, but all too often these requirements are not met. There is a common misconception, possibly related to the resilient nature of Bettas, that they require nothing more than a small bowl of water. The fact that they survive these conditions for a good portion of their short lives does not justify such care.

Bettas are also still used for fighting in many countries, leading to another misconception that Bettas are an aggressive fish that cannot be housed with other fish. It is true that male Betta splendens should not, as a rule, be housed together, but fighting between males is not a natural reaction - it is one that has been bred into these fish over many decades. Males are naturally territorial and will attempt to chase off or intimidate any male that wanders into their territory. Ironically, male Siamese Fighting Fish are actually often bullied in community tanks, particularly those with cumbersome finnage. Because of this tankmates for male Bettas should be selected with care. See our Betta Buddies article for more tips.

We hope you enjoy our site, and forum, and that we can help to make your Bettas as happy and healthy and magnificent as they should be!
